Katie, a freelance video editor in urgent need of work, receives a well-paid offer from an anonymous employer to edit a mysterious and strange video. Running out of money and facing eviction, Katie eagerly accepts the job. The video shows people being tortured and even killed in front of the cameras – really just an elaborately staged fantasy. But when that first job leads to even more lucrative work and disturbingly more realistic films about smell, Katie’s life begins to fall apart. Strange figures haunt her apartment, terrifying nightmares keep her awake, and a mysterious illness affects her cat. It’s only when Katie finally decides to quit her job that she discovers how cruel her anonymous employer really is and how brutally he will try to terminate the contract.
